<image:title>BioTC Culture - What Are CHO Cells? </image:title>
<image:caption>Chinese hamsters have been used in research since 1919, initially as substitutes for mice in typing pneumococci and later as vectors in Leishmania research, particularly for the study of kala-azar (visceral leishmaniasis). In 1948, the Chinese hamster was first used for breeding in U.S. research laboratories. In 1957, Dr. Theodore T. Puck obtained a female Chinese hamster from Dr. George Yerganian's laboratory at the Boston Cancer Research Foundation and derived the original Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cell line. The rapid growth of CHO cells in suspension culture and their high protein production capabilities made them a preferred cell line in biomanufacturing.</image:caption>

<image:title>BioTC Culture - What Are CHO Cells? - CHO cells, taken from the ovary of a Chinese hamster, are a type of epithelial cell, which means they come from the kind of cells that line the surfaces of organs in the body. This makes them tough and versatile, able to grow in different conditions, which is why they're so useful in making medicines.</image:title>

<image:title>BioTC Culture - White Paper: Scale-Up and Agitation Scale-Up - Tip Speed vs. Power per Volume - Scale-up in industrial processes refers to the process of increasing production material from small-scale development to large-scale manufacturing. It involves meticulous attention to factors like agitation, which plays a crucial role in various industries such as pharmaceuticals, chemical processing, and food production.</image:title>
<image:caption>This white paper delves into the significance of agitation scale-up, best practices, common challenges, emerging trends, and potential areas for future research and development in this critical aspect of industrial production.</image:caption>

<image:title>BioTC Culture - White Paper: Scale-Up and Agitation Scale-Up - Tip Speed vs. Power per Volume - Agitation is vital in the production of bioprocesses, particularly in promoting the mass transfer of gases like oxygen that are essential for optimal cell growth and health. In industries like pharmaceuticals, maintaining optimal agitation ensures consistent product quality and yield across different scale sizes.</image:title>
<image:caption>As an upstream specialist at Eli Lilly and Cytovance, understanding agitation's relevance was paramount in achieving desired product specifications without compromising cell viability or health.</image:caption>

<image:title>BioTC Culture - White Paper: Scale-Up and Agitation Scale-Up - Tip Speed vs. Power per Volume - Several strategies exist for scaling up agitation processes while maintaining optimal tip speed and power per volume (P/V) ratios. Constant P/V, Constant Tip Speed, and Constant kLa are commonly used approaches.</image:title>
<image:caption>Constant P/V, in particular, is widely adopted as it ensures the necessary power for appropriate mixing without causing excessive sheer stress on cultures. Calculating P/V involves factors like fluid density, agitation speed, impeller diameter, working volume, and impeller power number, which is determined during process development.</image:caption>

<image:title>BioTC Culture - Navigating the Path to Market: Understanding the Journey of Pharmaceutical Drugs - The journey of a pharmaceutical drug from initial discovery to market availability is a complex and multifaceted process, encompassing scientific research, regulatory approvals, clinical trials, manufacturing, marketing, and post-market surveillance. Understanding this intricate path sheds light on the meticulous steps and rigorous standards that govern the pharmaceutical industry.</image:title>

<image:title>BioTC Culture - Navigating the Path to Market: Understanding the Journey of Pharmaceutical Drugs - The journey begins with drug discovery, where scientists identify potential compounds or biological targets that could lead to therapeutic benefits. This phase involves extensive research, often spanning years of laboratory investigations, computational modeling, and preclinical studies to validate efficacy and safety profiles.</image:title>

<image:title>BioTC Culture - Navigating the Path to Market: Understanding the Journey of Pharmaceutical Drugs - Clinical trials are typically divided into three phases, each with distinct objectives and timelines:</image:title>
<image:caption>Phase 1: Lasts several months, involving 20-100 healthy volunteers to assess safety and dosage. Phase 2: Lasts several months to two years, involving several hundred patients to evaluate efficacy and side effects. Phase 3: Lasts one to four years, involving several thousand patients to confirm efficacy, monitor side effects, and compare with commonly used treatments. On average, the entire clinical trial process can take 6-7 years. However, the timelines can vary significantly based on the type of drug, the disease being targeted, and regulatory requirements.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Regulatory approval is a critical milestone in the drug development journey. Regulatory agencies, such as the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) in the United States or the European Medicines Agency (EMA) in Europe, review extensive data to assess the drug's safety, efficacy, manufacturing processes, labeling, and risk-benefit profile. The approval process involves:</image:caption>
