BioTC Builds Momentum with Back-to-Back March Cohorts, Expands into Summer Training Opportunities

OKLAHOMA CITY, OK — BioTC Oklahoma is building momentum in Oklahoma City’s biotech workforce pipeline, delivering two hands-on training cohorts in March through partnerships with Miles Architecture and Francis Tuttle Technology Center, with expanded summer training opportunities on the horizon for July.

Over the course of a single month, BioTC brought together both industry professionals and students to step inside a working lab environment, offering a closer look at what it actually takes to design, operate, and succeed in modern biotechnology spaces.

The first cohort, developed in collaboration with Miles Architecture, focused on Laboratory Design Fundamentals, equipping architects with a practical understanding of how lab workflows, safety requirements, and equipment needs directly shape design decisions for laboratory spaces.

“This course was developed in collaboration with their team to give a closer look at how laboratories actually function and how that translates into design. Tailoring training like this allows us to focus on the specific challenges and perspectives of our partners,” said Charles Burton, Manager of the Quality Control and Analytics Lab at BioTC.

The second cohort, hosted by Francis Tuttle Technology Center’s Medical Lab Assistant Program, focused on workforce development, providing students with hands-on experience with real lab techniques and equipment.

Students gained hands-on experience with essential lab techniques, beginning with precise pipetting and progressing into protein analysis. Throughout the program, they prepared standard curves and conducted protein quantification using microvolume spectrophotometry, reinforcing skills through real application.

For many participants, the experience reshaped their understanding of what working in a lab actually looks like.

“The amount of equipment we use is mind-blowing—from analytical balances to spectrophotometers—and there’s a lot more to learning how to use it than I expected.”

“I liked that we weren’t just watching or listening—we were actually doing everything ourselves.”

“The one-on-one help really stood out. If I didn’t understand something, someone would take the time to walk me through it.”

Others walked away with a clearer sense of direction and purpose.

“I want to be part of something that helps make the world a better place.”

“Technology is moving so fast—it feels like the right time to get into a field that’s constantly evolving.”

Together, these cohorts highlight BioTC’s ability to serve both sides of the ecosystem, supporting industry partners with customized training while also preparing the next generation of talent with real, hands-on experience.

Building on that momentum, BioTC is expanding its training opportunities this summer with two one-week cohort programs designed to meet participants at different stages of their academic and career journey.

A high school cohort will introduce students to foundational lab skills and career pathways in biotechnology, while an undergraduate-level cohort will provide more advanced, hands-on training for those pursuing degrees in fields such as biology, chemistry, and engineering.

Both programs are structured as one-week immersive experiences, emphasizing accessibility and flexibility while maintaining the same hands-on, real-world training approach that defines BioTC’s programming.
